Answer engine optimization (AEO) tools, also called AI visibility tools, are sampling systems that test how AI answer engines talk about your brand. They run a set of prompts again and again, then report how often answers mention or cite you.
Answer engines, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot, and Claude, reply with written answers. In a company-reported figure from Alphabet's June 2026 presentation, Google said "AI Overviews now have over 2.5 billion users each month."
Why AI Answers Change What You Need to Measure
Fewer people click through to websites when an AI summary appears, so AI search visibility tools measure what rankings and traffic miss. The Pew Research click study reported: "Users who encountered an AI summary clicked on a traditional search result link in 8% of all visits." In visits without an AI summary, users clicked a result 15% of the time.
Pew's study was observational and covered only Google searches by 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. It shows an association between summaries and fewer clicks, not proof that summaries cause the drop.
AI referrals, meaning visits that arrive from AI tools, are growing in some sectors. The Adobe holiday AI traffic report says U.S. retail AI traffic "increased by 693.4% compared to the year prior," and AI referrals were "converting 31% more than other traffic sources."
That data covers U.S. retail during the 2025 holiday season. Apply it to answer engine optimization in other industries with care.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO in One Table
AEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) are used almost interchangeably, and SEO is the older practice both build on. Vendors sell the same products as AEO tools, GEO tools, generative engine optimization tools, or LLM SEO tools.
| Practice | Goal | Surface | Primary metric |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO (search engine optimization) | Rank pages in classic search results | Blue links on Google and Bing | Rankings, clicks, and organic traffic |
| AEO (answer engine optimization) | Get your brand named or cited in direct answers | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity | Mention rate and citation rate |
| GEO (generative engine optimization) | Get your content used when a model writes an answer | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Perplexity | Share of voice across AI answers |
How AEO Tools Collect and Measure AI Answers
Every AEO metric depends on how the tool gathers answers. Check the collection method before you compare features.
AI engines often split one prompt into several web searches, a step called query fan-out, before they pick sources to cite. For background on that retrieval step, read how agentic search works.
API Calls vs Live Interface Capture
AEO tools collect answers in two main ways. Some call each model's API (application programming interface), the developer access point. Others capture the consumer interface that people use, through logged-out or logged-in sessions.
Answers from the two methods can differ in retrieval, citations, and formatting. Whether API answers match what consumers see is still an open question, so treat it as something to test. Ask each vendor which method it uses for each engine, then run a few of your prompts in the consumer app and compare.
Why One Snapshot Misleads: Variance and Sampling
AI answers change from run to run, so a single check can mislead. The SparkToro AI consistency study found "there's a <1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI, if asked 100X, will give you the same list of brands in any two responses".
The study is limited in scope. It used 12 brand-recommendation prompts that volunteers ran by hand in late 2025, and it is not peer-reviewed. It was also co-authored with an AI-tracking vendor.
Treat visibility as a rate measured over many repeated runs. An AI rank tracker that runs each prompt once a day gives you one data point per day. Ask vendors how many runs they do per prompt per day, and how they turn those runs into share of voice.
Engines, Locations, and Personas Change the Answer
Each answer engine cites different kinds of sources, so you need to track each engine on its own. A University of Toronto GEO study preprint found engines "differ significantly from each other in their domain diversity, freshness, cross-language stability, and sensitivity to phrasing."
Country, language, and persona also change the answer. A persona is a buyer profile, such as "CFO at a 200-person company," added to the prompt.
Cheaper tiers often leave engines out. At least 7 of the 12 entry tiers we checked cover four engines or fewer, and many skip Claude.
Core Metrics: Mention Rate, Citation Rate, and Share of Voice
Most tools in this guide report some version of these four metrics, under different names.
- Mention rate: The share of sampled answers that name your brand.
- Citation rate: The share of sampled answers that link to a page on your domain.
- Share of voice: Your brand mentions divided by all mentions of you and tracked competitors.
- Sentiment: Whether answers describe your brand in positive, neutral, or negative terms.
How We Evaluated These AEO Tools
We compared each tool on the same seven criteria, using its own pricing and product pages. Prices were checked on vendor pages on October 15, 2026, and may change after that date.
- Engines covered at the entry tier
- Prompts included at the entry tier
- Collection and refresh cadence
- Metrics reported
- Workflow and content features
- API or MCP access
- Entry price
The list order is not a ranking of quality, so the best AEO tools for you depend on these criteria. Olostep is web data infrastructure, not an AEO tool, so it is not ranked. Where a vendor page showed inconsistent or unconfirmed pricing, we note it in the review.

AEO Tool Reviews: Features, Pricing, and Best Fit
Each review covers what the tool does, its entry pricing at time of checking, one limitation, and who it fits. All facts come from the vendor's own pages.
1. Profound: Best for Enterprise Brands Needing Broad Engine Coverage
Profound tracks citations, sentiment, ranking, and competitive presence in AI answers. It also offers agent analytics, which log visits from AI crawlers to your site, plus credit-based content agents.
The free trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. The Enterprise plan is custom and covers up to 9 engines, with CSV/JSON exports and an API.
The main limitation is price transparency: the Profound pricing page lists no public paid price at time of checking. The trial also has no history, exports, or API, so it cannot show long-term trends.
2. Peec AI: Best for Teams Wanting Daily Tracking on a Budget
Peec AI tracks prompts daily and reports visibility, position, sentiment, share of voice, and citation share. It also offers an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, which lets AI assistants query your Peec data.
Starter costs €85/mo for 50 prompts and 3 models of your choice, with unlimited users. Pro costs €205/mo for 150 prompts, and Advanced costs €425/mo for 350 prompts, as listed at time of checking; confirm current pricing on the vendor page.
Prices are in euros, per the Peec AI pricing page. Peec AI lists a free-trial sign-up, but the page does not state its length. Three models may be too few if your buyers use more engines.
3. Otterly.AI: Best Low-Cost Entry Point
Otterly.AI tracks brand visibility and citations daily, and it includes GEO audits on its entry plan. Lite costs $29/mo ($25/mo billed annually) for 15 prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Copilot.
Gemini, AI Mode, and Claude are paid add-ons on Lite. API and MCP access start on the Standard plan at $189/mo, per the Otterly.AI pricing page.
Fifteen prompts is a small sample for most brands. Otterly.AI fits teams that want to test AEO tracking before committing a larger budget.
4. Scrunch: Best for Monitoring AI Bot Traffic Alongside Visibility
Scrunch pairs visibility tracking with reports on AI bot traffic to your site. Its Core plan also includes citations, sentiment, and site audits.

During checking, Scrunch's pricing page showed different plan layouts, one listing a $250 annual / $300 monthly Starter. Confirm current terms on the Scrunch pricing page before you budget.
The API is only on Enterprise, which also adds Claude, Gemini, and AI Mode. Teams that want raw data in their own systems will need that higher tier.
5. AthenaHQ: Best Free Plan With Wide Model Coverage
AthenaHQ offers a free Essential plan. That plan includes 300 credits across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini, and Copilot.
Starter costs $295/mo for 3,600 credits and 11 models, including Claude and AI Mode. One credit equals one AI response, and Starter adds sentiment, citation intelligence, and CSV export.
The API is a paid add-on on the AthenaHQ plans page. Every model draws from the same credit pool, so wide coverage uses credits faster.
6. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: Best for Existing Semrush Users
The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit adds AI tracking to the Semrush platform. It reports share of voice and sentiment, and it includes prompt research and an AI crawler audit.
The toolkit costs $99/mo for 25 prompts and 1 domain. Extra prompts cost $60/mo per 50, and an extra domain costs $99/mo, per the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit guide.
Semrush states there is no free trial. The tool fits teams that already run SEO in Semrush and want AI data in the same place.
7. Ahrefs Brand Radar: Best for Prompt-Database Research
Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks mentions, citations, and AI share of voice. Its AI Visibility Index gives you a database of 475M+ prompts to research.
Custom Prompts start at $50/mo for 2,500 checks a month. The AI Visibility Index costs $199/mo, and the Ahrefs Brand Radar page lists $699/mo for all models.
Pricing is layered, so the cost depends on which packages you combine.
8. HubSpot AEO: Best for HubSpot Marketing Teams
HubSpot AEO reports a brand visibility score, sentiment, competitor share of voice, and citation analysis. It also gives prompt suggestions and prioritized recommendations.
The standalone product costs $50/mo ($45/mo billed annually) and is labeled beta. It includes 25 prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, with a free trial that needs no credit card.
The HubSpot AEO product page does not describe API access. It fits teams already running marketing in HubSpot.
9. Goodie AI: Best for Combining Tracking With Content Agents
Goodie AI combines tracking with content and outreach agents, plus crawler analytics. All plans include citation analysis, sentiment, and an AEO content writer.
Core costs $295/mo for 110 prompts, 5 models, and 2 countries or languages. The models are ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, AI Mode, and Copilot, and Core has a 7-day free trial.
Agency client workspaces start at $399/mo, a separate offer from the $295 Core brand plan. Both are listed on the Goodie AI pricing page.
10. SE Visible: Best Prompt Volume per Dollar
SE Visible is SE Ranking's AI visibility product. It reports sentiment, share of voice, and cited domains and URLs, and includes CSV export and an API.
Basic costs $99/mo ($79/mo billed annually) for 200 prompts, about 30,000 answers a month, and 5 engines. Those engines are ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, Perplexity, and AI Overviews, and the trial lasts 10 days.
The SE Visible homepage lists Claude as "coming soon." Its page does not mention agent analytics or content workflows.
11. Writesonic: Best for Pairing Tracking With AI Writing
Writesonic adds AI visibility tracking to its AI writing product. Starter includes AI bot analytics, ads monitoring, and 15 AI articles a month.
Starter costs $79/mo billed annually for 50 prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini, and AI Overviews. The monthly price was not shown in the page text. The annual-savings note on the Writesonic pricing page implies roughly $99/mo billed monthly, though that price is not confirmed. A free trial needs no credit card.
Sentiment starts on the Growth plan, and all 8 platforms are only on Enterprise. Writesonic fits teams that want tracking and drafting in one product.
12. AirOps: Best for Content Teams Running Optimization Workflows
AirOps combines AI visibility data with content workflows. It also offers agent analytics, sentiment, competitor insights, and MCP and API access.
The Solo plan covers ChatGPT only, and Pro covers 7+ engines. The AirOps pricing page shows no public dollar prices, and its FAQ says pricing depends on task volume.
You can start for free on Solo and Pro. The lack of a list price makes budget comparison harder until you talk to AirOps.
How to Choose the Right AEO Tool
Choose an AEO tool by what each tracked answer costs and how the tool collects it. Use this checklist before you book demos.
- List the engines your buyers use, and drop tools that skip them at your tier.
- Estimate volume as prompts × engines × locations × runs per day × days.
- Divide the plan price by monthly tracked answers to get cost per tracked answer.
- Ask which collection method the vendor uses for each engine.
- Confirm export or API access if data must reach your warehouse or BI tool.
- Check workflow fit with your content tools, analytics, and team size.
Peec AI shows how the volume math works. Its Starter plan works out to 50 prompts × 3 models × 30 days of daily runs. That matches the roughly 4,500 AI answers a month on its pricing page.
Sticker prices hide large volume gaps. SE Visible lists about 30,000 answers a month for $99. HubSpot AEO lists 25 prompts on 3 engines for $50, without a stated answer count.
When to Build Your Own AEO Tracker Instead
Build your own AI rank tracker if you need custom prompts at scale, raw warehouse data, or a way to check a vendor's numbers.
Buy a tool if you need dashboards, a sentiment UI, or a fast start for a non-technical team. The build vs buy choice comes down to who will maintain the pipeline.
What a Custom Tracker Needs
A custom tracker turns repeated prompt runs into mention and citation rates you can trust. You need an engineer, a prompt list, and storage for raw answers.
- Define your prompts and the fan-out queries behind them. Use a web search API to see which pages surface for each query.
- Collect answers on a schedule, several times per prompt, through methods each engine's terms allow. Store each raw answer with its engine, date, location, and run number.
- Parse each answer for brand mentions and cited URLs, and save them as structured fields.
- Collect the cited URLs, then scrape cited pages to compare their structure, freshness, and entities. For hundreds of URLs, run batch scraping jobs in one asynchronous request.
- Compute mention rate, citation rate, and share of voice over a fixed window, such as 28 days.
You can add a source-grounded baseline by sending the same prompt to a web-grounded answer API. This illustrative request body for POST /v1/answers asks for structured brand data:
{
"task": "Which tools are best for tracking brand visibility in AI answers?",
"json_format": {
"brands_mentioned": [],
"top_recommendation": ""
}
}Your tracker works when rates stay steady across weeks without prompt changes, and shifts line up with real content or market changes. When scraping, follow each site's robots.txt rules, terms, and rate limits. Do not bypass logins, access controls, or CAPTCHAs.
Where Olostep Fits in the Stack
Olostep is the data layer under a tracker, not a dashboard. It handles web search, scraping, batches, and source-grounded answers, while you or a vendor handle reporting.
The Olostep Answers endpoint returns answers with a sources array that lists the URLs used. That list gives you a source-grounded baseline to compare against what each AI engine cites.
For recurring runs, scheduled research agents can run your prompt set without cron jobs you maintain. Pair the output with a BI tool, or use it to check numbers from one of the 12 vendors above.
Frequently Asked Questions About AEO Tools
These answers reflect vendor pages checked on October 15, 2026.
What Is the Difference Between AEO and GEO?
The terms overlap, and most vendors use them interchangeably. GEO puts more weight on generative engines, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, that write answers from many sources.
Are There Free AEO Tools?
AthenaHQ has a free plan with 300 credits. Profound, HubSpot AEO, Otterly.AI, SE Visible, Scrunch, Goodie AI, and Writesonic offer free trials.
How Much Do AEO Tools Cost?
Self-serve entry plans ran from $29 to $295 a month at time of checking. Enterprise pricing is custom.
How Often Should You Track AI Prompts?
Run prompts daily, with several samples per prompt, because answers change between runs. Judge trends over several weeks.
Can AEO Tools Guarantee Citations in ChatGPT?
No, AEO tools measure visibility and suggest fixes, but they cannot control model output. Be wary of any vendor that promises citations.
Which AI Engines Should You Track First?
Track the engines your buyers use, starting with ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Then add Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Claude as budget allows.
